SEM images reveal intraspecific differences in egg surface properties of common nase ( <i>Chondrostoma nasus</i> L.)

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been widely used to describe interspecific differences in egg quality of teleost freshwater fish, but potential intraspecific are poorly studied. Eggs many rheophilic cyprinids covered with adhesive structures such as attaching villi facilitating attachment at substrates spawning grounds high currents. Recent findings indicate that the cyprinid common nase (Chondrostoma nasus L.), a target species conservation, differs adhesiveness between populations, potentially explaining recruitment success. In this study, SEM image-based standardized protocol was established assess surface Chondrostoma eggs. Multivariate statistics detected significant properties among individual females and three different populations. These were mainly attributed length variability merging well coating filament-like connections these structures. The study highlight need for further investigations better understand relationship properties, stickiness hatching success ecology performance early life stages fish.
